The Questions Readers Ask Me Most (And What I Actually Say Back)

A handful of questions land in my inbox, often worded almost exactly the same way. I started keeping a running note of them on my phone, mostly so I’d stop answering the same thing five different ways in five different comment threads.

So today, I’m just going to answer them here, in one place, as honestly as I can.

“Do I have to believe in this for it to work?”

No, but you have to be willing to notice things. That’s different from belief. Belief asks you to accept something on faith before you’ve seen it. Noticing just asks you to pay attention to your own week and see what’s actually there.

Most of what I write about started as noticing, not believing.

“Isn’t this whole thing just privilege with better branding?”

Sometimes, yes. I’ll say plainly that I write this from a comfortable life, and that comfort buys me the time and quiet a lot of this work requires. I try not to pretend otherwise.

But I’d push back a little on the idea that noticing your own thoughts is a luxury good. The version of this that costs nothing — sitting with a feeling for thirty seconds before reacting to it — is the version I actually think matters most, and it’s available at any income.

“What do you actually do every morning?”

Less than people expect. Coffee, a few minutes with a notebook at the kitchen counter before anyone else is awake, and a short list of what I want the day to feel like rather than what I want it to accomplish.

Some mornings that list is one word long. That still counts.

“Did your divorce have anything to do with why you started this?”

Everything, honestly. Not because the marriage ending was a tragedy I needed to recover from — I’ve come to see it more as a redirection than a loss, one that pointed me toward a life I actually wanted instead of one that just looked right from the outside.

I didn’t find that by looking for someone new to love me.

I found it by learning to love myself first, and everything else here grew out of that one shift.

“What’s the one thing you’d tell someone just starting out?”

Stop waiting to feel ready. I spent a long time thinking clarity had to arrive before I was allowed to change anything, as if the plan needed to be finished before the first step counted.

It doesn’t work in that order.

The clarity tends to show up after you’ve already started, not before, which is inconvenient and also, I think, the whole point.

Those are the five I get asked most, but I know there are more sitting in comment sections and inboxes I haven’t gotten to yet. If you’ve got one, leave it below — I read all of them, even the ones I’m slow to answer.

And if you’d rather ask me things quietly, without an audience, my newsletter is where I answer the smaller, less tidy questions first — the ones that haven’t turned into a post yet, and maybe never will.

With love,
Wren
